The Ottawa International Children’s Festival exists to create a variety of programs for children aged four-fifteen, focusing on enriching school curriculum and promoting the arts as an integral part of children’s education. The Festival strives to present work that excites and challenges audiences of all ages; and prides itself on developing and producing award winning programming that comes from across Canada and around the world.

Projet Ottawa Children's Festival is Celebrating 40 Years - The Age of Wonder
Description du projet

This application is for “Celebrating 40 Years – The Age of Wonder”, taking place May 8 to May 18, 2025. The festival typically takes place on the grounds of LeBreton Flats Park and uses the theatres in the Canadian War Museum (Barney Danson Theatre and ateliers) as well as the theatres at Arts Court. In 2025the Festival will move to Lansdowne Park in the Glebe, which is a central “hub” for families, nearby to several schools, and has many accommodation arrangements available for tourists. Programming details include:

(1) Opening Night (May 8, 2025) events include the circus project by Zip Zap Circus from South Africa, the Architects of Air project from England, and a free performance by Vancouver’s Missy D, along with a week of shows and workshops by the artist;

(2) New Programming includes (i) Architects of Air (a walk-through installation of kaleidoscopic vinyl structure modelled on Islamic architecture as a creative experience and journey through the Moorish past of North Africa); (ii) Zip Zap Circus from South Africa with a project is entitled “MOYA” that celebrates, through physical theatre, and circus skills, the story of the end of apartheid after the release of Nelson Mandela from his 30 years in a South African prison; (iii) a one-person show from Korea called “A Show of Strings”, a joyful blend of object theatre, puppetry, and clowning; and (iv) Danish theatre Company Teater Reflecksion, one of Europe’s most highly acclaimed puppet companies will present “The Bench”;

(3) Additional Canadian productions from Vancouver and from Quebec including 12 performances exclusively in French from Theatre de L’Oeil who will present “176 pas” and Theatre Ubus from rural Quebec: the show, Memoirs of a Volcano; and

(4) Current and on-going programming continues through the Ottawa Children’s Festival de la Jeunesse and in addition to the ticketed programming inside the venues, OCF hosts a “Festival within a Festival” with onsite animators who rove the site and work with children in workshop settings, and ‘improv’ situations where small groups of children tell stories right on the spot.
